The Turkmen city of Anau will be declared the cultural capital of the Turkic world in 2024, Deputy Secretary General of the International Turkic Culture Organisation (TURKSOY) Sayit Yusuf told journalists.
This year, the title was awarded to the city of Shusha (Azerbaijan), where the 40th meeting of the Permanent Council of Culture Ministers of TURKSOY countries will be held on 13-14 October. The ministries of culture of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will take part in the meeting.
Anau is a place of pilgrimage. On the nearby territory there are archaeological monuments from the end of the 5th millennium BC. The ruins of a medieval mosque are popular with tourists. Its portals depict dragons, which is quite unique in Muslim architecture. A devastating earthquake in 1948 destroyed much of the building.
