Awfi Bahram Mines Extraction, an Afghan company, is implementing a $75mn project to import electricity from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Afghanistan, the 500-kilovolt line will offer an extra 1,000 megawatts of electricity from Turkmenistan and eventually address the problem of power shortages in Kabul and neighbouring provinces.
The agreement was signed by Afghanistan's Acting Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Alhaj Abdul Latif Mansoor, and the Vice President of the company, Mawlawi Noorullah Khan. The minister stressed the importance and value of implementing of the deal for the development of the energy sector in the country.
Experts told Daryo that Ashgabat has constructed the Turkmen-Afghan power lines Imamnazar-Andkhoy, Serhetabat-Herat and Rabatkashan-Kalainau towards Mazar-e-Sharif, out of its own funds in previous years.
All the aforementioned directions are encompassed by the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) transmission line project. Transit services are anticipated to generate approximately $110mn annually for the Afghan treasury.
