Azerbaijan has been importing Turkmen gas since 2022 thanks to a trilateral swap agreement with Iran. Against the backdrop of the energy crisis in global markets, the Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline project from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan, Turkey and Europe is becoming relevant, with negotiations scheduled.
Baku and Ashgabat also play a key role in the development of international transport and transit corridors such as Lapis Lazuli (Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey) and the Caspian Sea-Black Sea.
According to the Azerbaijani side, the volume of mutual trade between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan in January-August 2023 totalled $644.767mn, which is more than two and a half times higher than in the previous year. The lion's share of trade transactions is in the gas sector.
