Armenia has lodged a lawsuit against Azerbaijan with the United Nations International Court of Justice. In response to the situation in Karabakh, Yerevan alleges that Baku has violated the international convention aimed at eradicating all forms of racial discrimination.
Armenia's demands include the following: Azerbaijan must permit all individuals to depart from Nagorno-Karabakh, enable UN and Red Cross personnel to meet with the Armenian populace in the region, reinstate the communal structure of the area, and acknowledge the validity of civil status documents from the dissolved Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
Additionally, Armenia insists on the withdrawal of Azerbaijani military forces from civilian settlements in Karabakh and the prohibition of Armenian heritage sites' destruction in the region. As per the lawsuit, Azerbaijan is required to provide reports on compliance measures to the UN within one month of filing the application, followed by subsequent reports every three months until a final decision is reached.
On September 19-20, Azerbaijan regained full control over Karabakh territory as a result of "anti-terrorist operations." The government of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, in existence since the early 1990s, dissolved itself, leading to the departure of 100,000 out of the 120,000 ethnic Armenians residing in Karabakh in less than two weeks.
