According to a report by Sputnik Armenia, the President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), Araik Harutyunyan, has announced his resignation effective from September 1.
"This is a final decision, which I made two days ago, taking into account my contacts with internal and external factors, as well as the broader public in recent weeks. This is solely my well-considered decision, based on the analysis of the data available to me," Harutyunyan stated.
He did not specify whether he plans to continue his political career or reveal his successor.
The NKR President mentioned that his resignation is intended to facilitate the activation of the peaceful resolution process in the region. Harutyunyan emphasized that currently, his leadership in Nagorno-Karabakh is causing serious dissatisfaction within the leadership of Azerbaijan, which is hindering the negotiation process.
The politician also noted that the trust level of Nagorno-Karabakh residents in the local authorities has significantly diminished lately, thus "initiating a comprehensive renewal of state institutions is necessary."
Araik Harutyunyan held the position of NKR President since May 2020. Prior to that, from 2007 to 2017, he was the Prime Minister of Nagorno-Karabakh.
