U.S. President Joe Biden has sent a message to his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov on the occasion of Independence Day, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
"We are working together to tackle the climate crisis and reduce methane emissions". It was previously reported that the two countries had agreed to form a working group on methane mitigation and will endeavor to feature outcomes by upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP-28) in Dubai (UAE).
Methane is a climate threat 80 times more potent than CO2.
"The United States and Turkmenistan stated their intentions to cooperate on deploying leak detection and repair solutions as well as develop a methane reduction investment plan in 2023 to control methane emissions in the oil and gas sector," the U.S. State Department said in a press release following annual bilateral consultations in Washington.
Turkmenistan, which is one of the key energy suppliers in the region, is considering joining the Global Methane Pledge.
Experts told Daryo that local experts are working to increase the recovery of associated petroleum gas and reduce natural gas losses during extraction, transport, storage and processing.
