Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov received the newly appointed European Union (EU) ambassador, Beata Pęksa, who presented her credentials, television channel Altyn Asyr reports.
"Our country attaches great importance to cooperation with the European Union," said the head of state, reaffirming his willingness to strengthen these relations. Some of the most promising areas for partnership were identified as traffic industries, energy and "green" technologies.
Contacts at the highest level have recently become more active, according to the information. Berdimuhamedov recently met with European Council President Charles Michel on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, USA.
"European Union technical projects in science and education, ecology, improvement of legislation, energy and other areas have been successfully implemented in Turkmenistan."
Experts told Daryo that Europe hopes to receive Turkmen gas via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Turkey. Berdimuhamedov is scheduled to visit EU headquarters in Brussels later this year.
A delegation from the European Parliament recently visited Ashgabat. The question of ratification of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement signed with Turkmenistan in 1998 was discussed.
Bilateral relations are currently governed by an Interim Trade Agreement. Turkmenistan's two-way trade with EU countries from January to May amounted to €494.66mn, 17.8% more than in the previous year.
