A new intergovernmental agreement concerning joint customs control of energy resources crossing the Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan customs border has been approved by the Kazakhstan Senate, media reports.
The document, signed in Astana on December 6, 2021, applies to energy resource movement via pipeline transport and power lines.
Custom authorities from both countries will conduct monthly controls of accounting devices and verification of customs means of identification to ensure compliance with customs and tariff regulations and increase the effectiveness of customs control. Ratification of this agreement is expected to improve the reliability of declared information during customs declaration.
The bill will be submitted to the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, for signature after Senate approval.
Kazakhstan is currently discussing the transit of Russian gas to Uzbekistan via the Kazakhstan section of the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline. The country plans to have its gas pipelines ready for transit by October this year.
Earlier, Daryo reported that Uzbekistan has experienced a significant decrease in gas exports to China, with a 40% decline in natural gas supply compared to the previous year. According to data from the General Customs Administration of China, the export of Uzbek natural gas to China brought in over $370 mn in the first 8 months of the year.
