Turkmenistan is interested in cooperating with South Korean companies in the construction of railways and related infrastructure, electrification and other related areas, the National Agency of Transport under the Government of Turkmenistan reports.
According to the information, the management of Türkmendemirýollary (Turkmen Railways) held an online meeting with representatives of Korea Railway Corporation and Korea National Railway.
"The parties, with the participation of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea, agreed to work on organising the visit of South Korean railway workers to Turkmenistan in late October or early November 2023."
Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan is working on the electrification of its railways, in particular the purchase of modern locomotives powered by electric motors.
Ashgabat has been active in international rail freight transport in recent years. In 2014, the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway was inaugurated, with a total length of 900km.
It provides transit links between the countries of northern Europe and Russia with the countries of the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean and south-east Asia.
In 2016, the railway from the Turkmen city of Atamurat to the Afghan village of Aqina became operational. This section is part of a transnational railway project along the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan route.
