The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek has handed down a six-year prison sentence to activist Emil Bekiev for his involvement in advocating for the overthrow of the government, inciting riots, and promoting national hatred. The City Court has upheld this verdict, as reported on the official website for judicial decisions and court proceedings.
As per the prosecution, Bekiev used his Facebook account to express the view that "upstanding individuals should assume positions of authority," openly criticized government officials, and called for public demonstrations.
The case documents reveal that starting from approximately January 2022, Bekiev consistently shared provocative video messages and posts on his social media page, aimed at destabilizing the socio-political climate within the Kyrgyz Republic. His content also contained elements of incitement to national, racial, or religious animosity, and encouraged active resistance against the legitimate requests of government authorities, often involving acts of civil unrest.
Following a thorough examination of the case, the district court found Emil Bekiev guilty of violating multiple articles of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, related to public incitement for the violent seizure of power, rioting, and hatred based on racial, ethnic, national, or religious differences. Consequently, Bekiev has been sentenced to a six-year prison term in a correctional facility with a general regime.
Emil Bekiev was apprehended in Moscow in September 2022 and subsequently transferred to the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic.
