Renowned Italian documentary filmmaker Mario Giani has embarked on an exciting cinematic journey in Kyrgyzstan, aiming to bring the rich and fascinating nomadic culture of the country to global audiences. The Tourism Development Support Fund announced his arrival, marking a significant milestone in his prolific career.
Mario Giani, an 80-year-old director known for hosting several popular TV programs in Italy and whose documentaries garner millions of views on YouTube, specializes in telling stories about diverse people, their customs, cultures, and traditions. This marks his first-ever visit to Kyrgyzstan, a country he stumbled upon by sheer chance.
"It’s a funny story — I went to a car service to change a broken glass, and the manager of that workshop in Italy turned out to be a pretty girl from Kyrgyzstan. She told me about your country. I had never been here before, although I travel a lot. So when I returned home, I started looking for information about Kyrgyzstan and found a lot of interesting things for myself. I called Kyrgyzstan’s Embassy in Italy, told them I wanted to make a movie, and here I am," Giani chuckled, recounting how his serendipitous encounter with Kyrgyzstan unfolded.
Giani, accompanied by his dedicated film crew, embarked on an immersive 11-day journey across Kyrgyzstan. They covered a staggering 1,500 kilometers, exploring the picturesque villages nestled along the southern shore of the enchanting Issyk-Kul Lake and experiencing the unique nomadic lifestyle at the Nomad's Dream yurt camp on Son-Kul Lake.
"We traveled around Kyrgyzstan for 11 days, drove 1,500 kilometers and I think we filmed all the most interesting things. It was very entertaining to talk to ordinary people who live in the villages. It was interesting to film the life of nomads who live in yurts, and I liked this dwelling myself," Giani remarked.
The Italian director is determined to encapsulate the essence of Kyrgyzstan's nomadic culture in his documentary film, which he plans to complete over the next few months. With a promise to share the film with all Kyrgyzstanis, Giani aims to introduce the world to the hidden treasures of this Central Asian gem.
Kyrgyzstan's nomadic culture, with its distinctive yurts, ancient traditions, and breathtaking landscapes, is a captivating subject for any filmmaker. Mario Giani's project not only brings international attention to this unique way of life but also strengthens cultural exchange between Italy and Kyrgyzstan.
As the production of this remarkable documentary unfolds, anticipation grows among both Kyrgyzstanis and global audiences eager to witness the magic of the nomadic world through the lens of Mario Giani's camera.
