In January-August 2023, 36.8 thousand foreign citizens entered Uzbekistan for commercial purposes, among which the largest number is Turkmenistan - 21.4 thousand, according to the Statistics Agency under the President of Uzbekistan.
This is followed by citizens of Tajikistan - 9.3 thousand people; Afghanistan - 1.1 thousand; China - 0.7 thousand; India - 0.6 thousand; Turkey - 0.6 thousand; Kyrgyzstan - 0.5 thousand; South Korea - 0.5 thousand; USA - 0.3 thousand; Iran - 0.2 thousand.
Turkmen citizens have required visas to cross the border since 1999, after Ashgabat decided to withdraw from a visa-free agreement with the CIS.
The common border with Uzbekistan is Turkmenistan's longest - 1,700 km. Some 300,000 ethnic Uzbeks live in Turkmenistan, while more than 200,000 Turkmen live in Uzbekistan. Both countries are interested in increasing cross-border trade.
