Transportation via the railway network between Russia and Turkmenistan along the eastern route of the International Transport Corridor (ITC) "North-South" for January-August 2023 has increased by 57% compared to last year.
This was stated by Dmitry Murev, CEO of the Russian company RZD Logistics, in an interview with TASS.
"We can confidently predict a further strengthening of Turkmenistan's role in the development of the North-South ITC and an increase in the volume of railway transport," he said.
The intergovernmental agreement on the creation of the North-South corridor was signed by Russia, Iran and India in 2000. Since then, more than a dozen states have joined the document.
Experts told Daryo that the distance of cargo transport via this route is more than half that of the sea route through the Suez Canal. "North-South" includes three routes.
The first route runs along the western coast of the Caspian Sea through Dagestan (Russia), Azerbaijan and Iran, with access to the ports of the Persian Gulf, India, Pakistan, South-East Asia and Africa.
The second route is maritime, linking the ports of the five Caspian littoral states. The third route runs along the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea from Russia through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan with access to Iran.
