Japan's Sumitomo is supplying equipment for drilling operations at the world's largest onshore gas field, Galkynysh (Mary region, Turkmenistan), local NebitGas reports.
Another well has produced a commercial flow of 2.2mn cubic metres of natural gas per day. The work at a depth of more than 4,000 metres was carried out by specialists from the Turkmengaz state concern.
Galkynysh reserves, together with the adjacent Yashlar and Garagel fields, are currently estimated at 27.4tn cubic metres. "This creates ample opportunities for Turkmenistan's active integration into the international energy system".
Galkynysh is one of the main sources of supply to China and will be the raw material base for the pipeline under construction to South Asia and the a project under discussion to Europe via the Caspian Sea.
Energy experts told Daryo that this gas supergiant could eventually produce around 200bn cubic metres of gas a year. During the study period, the area of Galkynysh was increased from 1.9 thousand square km to 5 thousand.
