North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has noted the importance of Turkmenistan's role as a key partner in Central Asia, particularly on issues of regional stability and security.
The Turkmen Foreign Ministry reports that Ambassador Sapar Palvanov in Belgium presented his credentials as head of Turkmenistan's mission to NATO. During the meeting, Stolneberg highlighted the country's active work in providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.
The Turkmen diplomat announced key areas of cooperation, covering chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear safety, emergency management, cybersecurity, military medicine, counter-terrorism, countering the illicit drug trade, as well as foreign language training programs for the military specialists.
Turkmenistan has adopted a military doctrine, the essence of which has remained unchanged since 1995 - defence sufficiency, a policy of positive neutrality and refusal to participate in any military-political alliances.
Experts told Daryo that cooperation with NATO is only part of a long-term programme aimed primarily at helping the country tackle environmental and health problems.
