Turkmenistan and Afghanistan have agreed to increase the volume of freight traffic along the Serhetabat-Turgundi railway line, Türkmendemirýollary (Turkmen Railways) reports.
The talks were held with representatives of the Herat branch of the Afghan Railway Administration. An agreement was reached on the safe transport of Afghan commercial goods to improve the management of the land port of Turgundi.
Local experts told Daryo that the locality is included in the Lapis Lazuli (Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey) international transit project.
According to the project, railways and highways would connect Turgundi to Ashgabat and then to the Caspian port of Turkmenbashi. The corridor would continue to Baku, then via Tbilisi to Ankara with branches to Poti and Batumi.
The budget of the project, which aims to facilitate transit logistics and simplify customs procedures, was initially estimated at $2bn.
