During a heavy rainstorm on August 20 in Moscow, at least five people went missing while participating in an underground sewer excursion, Meduza reported.
The tour was led by an urban explorer guide. Among the excursion participants were Dmitry Markushkin, a 47-year-old head of the PR department at "Lanit" company, his 15-year-old daughter Elizaveta, their 18-year-old relative Gleb Lagashin, and his friend Victoria. Following the rainstorm, contact was lost with the group, leading their relatives to report them missing to the police.
On August 21, the bodies of a young man and a young woman were found in the Moscow River (with differing sources identifying them as Victoria and Elizaveta). Another source suggests that three bodies were found – two young women and a young man. There is also mention of a third body found in the Varvarka area, though it remains uncertain whether it is related to those missing during the sewer excursion.
According to reports from RIA Novosti, a man's body was discovered in a collector near Paveletsky Railway Station. The search for the remaining members of the group is ongoing. There is speculation that more than 20 people may have participated in the tour, though the exact number is unknown.
112 reports that the website offering sewer tours for 9,000 rubles per person stated that tours would not be conducted during rainy weather. The violation of this rule remains unexplained.
Vice-Speaker of the State Duma Boris Chernyshov has called for criminal responsibility for unauthorized access to all underground facilities and urban infrastructure systems. Currently, such responsibility is only stipulated for access to protected facilities.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has initiated a criminal case for providing services that do not meet safety requirements. The organizer of the excursion, Nikita Dubas, has been summoned for questioning. Konstantin Filippov, who led the tour, is reported as missing.
