On August 20, presidential elections took place in Ecuador. To participate, instead of Villavicencio, the candidate from the "Historia" movement, Cristian Zurita, arrived at the polling station wearing a bulletproof vest. The candidate cast his vote accompanied by police and soldiers. Another candidate, Daniel Noboa, also visited the polling station in a bulletproof vest.

On the evening of August 9, in the capital of Ecuador, Quito, unknown individuals fired three shots at Villavicencio's head as he was traveling in a car after a pre-election event. He was taken to a clinic without signs of life and was later declared dead.
Nine more people were wounded in the shootout, and the attacker was also killed. A state of emergency was declared in the republic for 60 days. After the incident, five out of seven presidential candidates announced the suspension of their campaigns.
On August 15, the leader of the "Civil Revolution" political movement in the province of Esmeraldas, Pedro Briones, was shot dead by unknown assailants near his home.
