The pollution of the cross-border R-1 canal poses a significant challenge for the Turkestan region's residents, media reports. The canal is the primary drinking water source for seven Saryagash district settlements.
The water quality has significantly deteriorated recently, with animal and bird remains floating in it. The residents are compelled to purchase drinking water and clean the canal, causing great apprehension among the villagers who worry about contracting dangerous infections from the contaminated water.
A special delegation even came from the Kibray district of the Tashkent region to investigate the issue.
According to Atham Kurbanov, Head of the inspection of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of Uzbekistan, the landfill meets all standards and is not located near the canal. They will install additional surveillance cameras to prevent unauthorized garbage disposal and ensure the necessary amount of water is provided.
Kazakhstan funded the reconstruction of the R-1 canal three years ago, and the state-owned company Kazvodkhoz is accountable for its operations.
Although a special commission from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan has seen the remains of the animals, no bacteria dangerous to human health were found in the composition of the water.
However, the villagers doubt that the situation will be corrected soon and ask for a resolution at the interstate level.
The authorities are deploying their proficiency to tackle the issue in compliance with mutual accords and to maintain favorable bilateral neighborly relations.
