The second phase of the Kanzhar (Dagger) 2023 joint military exercises, conducted by the armed forces of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, unfolded at the Aktau garrison's Oymash training range in the Mangystau Region. These exercises are aimed at enhancing interoperability between the two nations' armed forces and honing their ability to respond effectively to potential terrorist threats while strengthening military security in Central Asia.
Attending the exercise were Kazakh Defense Minister Ruslan Zhaksylykov and Uzbek Defense Minister Bakhodir Kurbanov. The primary focus of this phase of the Kanzhar exercises was on developing rapid response techniques and improving collaborative efforts to counter terrorist threats.
Earlier in the month, Uzbekistan had initiated the first stage of the Kanzhar 2023 exercises, which included command and staff training along with automated battle simulations. The second phase, held in Kazakhstan, advanced the training to real-world conditions, encompassing both day and night combative exercises conducted under challenging natural conditions, including high air temperatures and dustiness.
The exercise's overarching scenario revolved around the presence of international terrorist organizations in the region. These groups were depicted as having established base areas and hidden arms and ammunition caches, facilitating illicit activities such as drug trafficking. In response to this scenario, a joint special forces detachment from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan was tasked with detecting, localizing, and neutralizing these armed groups.
One of the highlights of the exercise involved air observers who utilized drone technology to pinpoint the exact location of a simulated militant base. This information was then relayed to pilots, who coordinated with army aviation to provide air support. Subsequently, a second group of special forces, backed by aircraft and helicopters, executed a raid on the mock enemy base, successfully dismantling the threat.
The training drills were meticulously designed to emulate conditions close to actual combat scenarios. Participants engaged in artillery and anti-aircraft systems, helicopters, planes, and unmanned aerial vehicles, reinforcing their adaptability and preparedness for multifaceted threats.
The joint military exercises underscore the commitment of both Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to maintaining regional stability and security. By fostering collaboration and interoperability between their armed forces, these nations aim to thwart potential threats and ensure the well-being of Central Asia.
