Azerbaijan has increased purchases of Turkmen gas through Iran by more than one and a half times, Iranian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Gholam Abbas Arbab Khales said.
"As for Turkmen gas supplies via Iran...We are 4,5-5mn cubic metres per day of swap (on reimbursement terms - Daryo) supplies to Azerbaijan. Now they have increased to 7-7,5mn cubic metres," the TASS agency quoted the diplomat as saying.
According to him, the potential for swap supplies in this direction reaches 20mn cubic metres of gas per day.
Local experts told Daryo that deliveries under the trilateral agreement started in 2022. Under the contract, Iran can receive up to 3,0-4,0bn cubic metres of gas per year from Serakhs, Turkmenistan, to supply its equivalent to Astara, Azerbaijan.
These transit services help provide natural gas to Iranian provinces such as Rezavi, North and South Khorasan, Golestan and Semnan, which are remote from national resources.
