UAE studying possibility of freight traffic on Turkmenistan's railways, the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), part of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), reports. The EAEU comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.
UAE Ambassador to Russia Mohammad Ahmad Al Jaber discussed with EEC Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Arzybek Kozhoshev the prospects for co-operation in the development of the North-South International Transport Corridor.
"Possibilities of increasing the shipment of goods from EAEU countries by railway through Turkmenistan and Iran and further by sea to the UAE (and in the opposite direction) are being studied," Kozhoshev said.
The possibility of increasing food cargo shipments from the five countries to the UAE is also being considered as part of the Eurasian Agroexpress, a joint project of the EAEU countries.
Local experts told Daryo that the eastern branch of the North-South route passes through Turkmenistan.
A 700-km railway corridor between Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran was built in 2014. However, with a capacity of 10mn tonnes of cargo annualy, only a tenth of it was used until recently.
This route can be used to freely transport cargo to the Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean and European countries.
