Starting January 1, 2027, Kyrgyzstan will enforce a comprehensive ban on the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of plastic film packages and plastic goods. President Sadir Japarov has signed the corresponding legislation, with the aim of mitigating the detrimental impact of polymer materials on both public health and the environment in Kyrgyzstan, the president's press service reports.
Additionally, the import of polyethylene bags and plastic items will be prohibited in the country.
Furthermore, as of January 1, 2024, a prohibition will be in effect regarding the production of plastic products and packages derived from polymer film within Kyrgyzstan's specially designated natural and biosphere regions. Nevertheless, this ban will not apply to export-oriented packages made from biodegradable polymer materials, provided they lack handles and are intended for household use.
The list of proscribed plastic items encompasses various single-use products, such as disposable plastic containers, plastic food packaging, plastic bottles, plastic capsules, and plastic food bags.
The new law will take effect 15 days following its official publication. Comparable measures to curb single-use plastics have been implemented globally. In India, for instance, 19 categories of single-use plastic items were prohibited during the summer of 2022, including items like cups and tubes.
Moreover, Europe has taken stringent steps against single-use plastics, with a strict ban on single-use plastic containers initiated in 2021. As per the legislation passed in 2019, European Union member states were required to eliminate such items from the market and cease production by July 3, 2021. A 12-month grace period was provided for the sale of existing stocks, after which the ban was fully enforced.
