Kyrgyzstan has experienced a surge in measles cases, with a total of 1,507 patients being recorded since the advent of 2023. This increase in measles cases is not limited to Kyrgyzstan alone, as other countries, including Tajikistan, Russia, and Türkiye, are also grappling with the same issue.
Measles has affected people across different age groups. Out of the total number of cases, 450 affected individuals were less than one year old, 678 were between the ages of one to four years, 208 were between five to nine years old, 46 were between ten to 14 years of age, ten were between 15 to 19 years old, 68 were between 20 to 29 years old, and 47 cases were 30 years old or older.
Measles is a highly infectious viral disease, and individuals who are neither vaccinated nor have previously been infected are at a heightened risk of contracting the disease if they come into close proximity with a measles patient.
Earlier, Daryo reported that neighboring Kazakhstan recorded a marked increase in measles cases during July, with the region of Almaty being the most significantly affected. The country has reported 2,694 cases of measles between January 1 and July 27, a stark contrast to the mere 10 cases recorded in 2022.
Meanwhile, some 164 citizens of Uzbekistan have been found to have measles since the advent of 2023, according to the Sanitary and Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health Committee.
