The Tajikistan government, under the direction of President Emomali Rahmon, on August 2 issued a resolution that bans the importation of vehicles produced before 2013.
The new regulation supersedes the previous one which prohibited the entry of cars produced before 2005.
The Customs and the Ministry of the Interior are tasked to enforce this new policy in the areas of customs and vehicle registration.
In response to a new resolution from the President's press service, comments have explained the ban on importing motor vehicles until 2013.
The ban is aimed at renewing the transportation fleet, improving service quality, preventing accidents on roads, protecting the environment, and reducing harmful emissions.
The comments note that many old vehicles are currently on the country's roads, the primary source of harmful emissions. Most traffic accidents occur with the involvement of such "old" cars.
