The farmers of the Bobojon-Gafurovsky district in the Sughd region of Tajikistan have suffered a loss of over 1,000 hectares of cultivated land where they used to grow cotton. This information was revealed by Nusratullo Salimzoda, the head of the region, at a press conference on August 1.
The region had planted 8,200 hectares, but due to drought and water scarcity in Khodjabokirgan Creek, the source of irrigation for these areas, a portion of the crops has perished.
Despite this setback, the farmers are determined to continue following their plan.
Similar water scarcity issues are being faced by farmers in neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
In Tajikistan, 175,700 hectares of land have been used for cotton cultivation, which amounts to 94.5% of the total cultivated area, as per the Ministry of Agriculture.
According to a report by the Eurasian Development Bank, a lack of regional cooperation may result in a deficit of irrigation water in Central Asian nations by the year 2050.
