From January to June of 2023, Tajikistan's wheat imports reached over 439,000 tons, indicating a rise of 83,500 tons compared to the same period in 2022, media reports.
Flour imports also saw a rise, reaching more than 30,000 tons, an increase of 5,600 tons. Rice imports increased by 5,900 tons to 15,300 tons. Experts attribute the surge in imports to the growing demand from the population.
According to the data from Tajikistan's Ministry of Agriculture, the area of cereal crops is more than 392,000 hectares, an increase of 1,800 hectares from 2022.
The volume of cereal crops, comprising mainly wheat, maize, and rice, reached 705,200 tons, a 2.5% increase from the first half of the previous year.
The Ministry of Economy predicts Tajikistan unveiled plans to grow 1.6mn tons of grain this year, including 975,000 tons of wheat and 1.1mn tons of potatoes.
Reportedly, Tajikistan purchased 883,700 tons of Kazakh wheat for the first ten months of 2022/23, making it the second-highest importer of this product. This is an increase from the 734,400 tons purchased during the same period in the previous season.
