The Ukrainian government has a contingency plan in place in case of President Volodymyr Zelensky's assassination, Politico reports.
In such a scenario, the country's governance would be handed over to a council likely comprised of Andriy Yermak, the head of the presidential office, Dmitry Kuleba, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Alexei Reznikov, the Minister of Defense. This council would be led by Ruslan Stefanchuk, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, while Valeriy Zaluzhny would continue as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The existence of this plan was mentioned by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken back in March 2022, emphasizing the importance of ensuring continuity of power for the Ukrainian people. It's noteworthy that Russia has attempted to assassinate or capture Zelensky since the start of the war, with calls for such actions resurfacing in March 2023.
Due to ongoing threats, Zelensky's foreign visits are kept confidential until the last moment as a precaution. In May 2022, Zelensky revealed the country's "Plan B" in case of his demise, emphasizing the preparedness of the government to handle such situations, with separate contingency arrangements for the Cabinet of Ministers to ensure the country's protection and governance even under challenging circumstances.
