Turkmenistan is the only one of the five Central Asian states (due to natural gas sales) with a surplus trade balance with China.
According to China's General Administration of Customs, in the first half of 2023, total trade between the two countries grew 12.3% to $5.55bn. Exports to Turkmenistan totalled $476mn, while imports reached $5.07bn, of which gas shipments were $5.05bn.
Overall, China has exported $26.4bn worth of goods to Central Asia since the beginning of the year, while imports totalled $13.5bn (dominated by oil and gas).
During the reporting period, China's largest trading partner in the region was Kazakhstan, with trade turnover with it rising 26.8% to $18.25bn.
China's mutual trade turnover with Kyrgyzstan totalled $7.92bn (27.6% more than a year earlier), with Tajikistan reached $2.11bn (up 84.7%) and with Uzbekistan - $6.1bn (up 26.8%).
