Turkmenistan will propose to develop a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, which begins its work in September, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports. Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov said at a government meeting.
"Turkmenistan will also continue working on its initiative to establish the UN Regional Centre for Climate Change Technology in Central Asia."
Proposals for the creation of the Caspian Environment Initiative and the UN Council on Water Resources Use in Central Asia, headquartered in Ashgabat, will also be announced in New York.
Turkmenistan is one of the key suppliers of natural gas in the region, exporting it to China and a number of CIS countries. Emissions of methane, a threat to the climate 80 times more potent than CO2, come mainly from natural gas extraction and leaks.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov recently ordered the creation of an inter-industry commission to reduce methane emissions. Local experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan plans to take action by increasing the utilisation of associated petroleum gas and reducing natural gas losses during extraction, transportation, storage and processing.
