The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) together with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) held a workshop in Ashgabat in the field of achieving a neutral balance of land degradation.
The event was organised within the framework of the project "Conservation and Sustainable Management of Land Resources and High Nature Value Ecosystems in the Aral Sea Basin for Multiple Benefits", the "Turkmenistan: Altyn Asyr" reports.
Ensuring a neutral balance of land degradation "promotes a functional balance between what the land gives us and what we give to it, contributing to a balanced approach," the information said.
Experts told Daryo that land degradation (soil erosion, salinisation, waterlogging and desertification) is a pressing global problem.
It leads to serious consequences such as reduction of countries' gross domestic product (GDP) and food security, climate change and loss of biodiversity.
Turkmenistan is home to one of the largest sand deserts in the world, the Karakum desert, which covers most of the country's territory - 350,000 km².
