Turkmenistan is committed to further strengthening cooperation with the European Commission in all areas of interaction, including in the energy sector.
Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry says this position was voiced during the meeting of Turkmenistan's Ambassador to Belgium Sapar Palvanov, who presented his credentials to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"The Head of the European Commission noted the prospects for further expansion of partnership. The parties expressed their readiness to further develop effective cooperation between Turkmenistan and the EU."
The EU hopes to import Turkmen gas and has long discussed building a 300km pipeline across the Caspian Sea to then connect to infrastructure in Azerbaijan, Turkey and Europe.
In 2015, a Declaration on Energy Co-operation between Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and the European Union was signed in Ashgabat. The document was emphasised on this project.
In December 2022, the presidents of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Turkey met in Awaza to discuss options for transporting Turkmen gas to Europe. The parties agreed to set up working groups.
Experts say that if Turkmenistan could be connected to the Southern Gas Corridor, which has been supplying Azeri gas since late 2020, it would help strengthen EU energy security.
Europe is desperately trying to find new sources of energy amid the war in Ukraine.
