The current trade between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan is nearing the $1bn mark. Kazakhstan's Ministry of Trade aims to triple this amount in the years to come, media reports.
Afghanistan is a significant purchaser of Kazakhstan's flour exports, with grain and sunflower oil exports to the country also increasing in recent years.
The "Mazari - Sharif - Kabul - Peshawar" transport corridor project is considered one of the most promising joint ventures. It will provide a smoother communication route between Central Asian, South Asian, and Middle Eastern countries.
Kanat Tumys, Kazakhstan's Deputy Foreign Minister, believes that strengthening trade ties with Afghanistan will also help develop other areas of two-way cooperation. This includes the formation of new transportation logistics routes to the south, reaching the Pakistani market with approximately 220mn people and the Pakistani ports of Karachi and Gwadar, allowing entry into the Gulf and Middle Eastern markets.
Kairat Torebayev, the country's Vice-Minister of Trade and Integration, states that Afghanistan trades the most with Kazakhstan among all the Central Asian countries. Mutual trade almost reached $1bn in the last year, and they plan to increase it to $3bn in the coming years.
Kazakhstan views Afghanistan as both a valuable trading partner and a crucial transit country.
