North Korean leader Kim Jong Un showcased the country's military might to Russian defence chief Sergei Shoigu and a Chinese delegation, including the Hwasong intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with solid propellants, which enables quicker launches compared to liquid-fuel-based ICBMs. Additionally, two new drone designs were also on display during the visit on July 26, BBC reported.
The occasion for the visit was Pyongyang's celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War's armistice, traditionally marked by massive military parades. This event served as an opportunity for North Korea to reaffirm its alliances with both Russia and China, long-time allies who have supported the country since the Korean War.
The visit of foreign delegates, including Russia's Sergei Shoigu and China's Li Hongzhong, highlights a possible easing of Covid-19 restrictions in North Korea. The inclusion of foreign envoys in the Victory Day parade suggests a willingness to engage with the international community despite North Korea's previous isolationist stance during the pandemic.
The gesture of exchanging personal letters between Kim Jong Un and Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping signifies the continued camaraderie between North Korea and its allies. China's historical support during the Korean War and Russia's shared opposition to the United States have contributed to their enduring relationships.
However, the event also takes place amidst accusations that Pyongyang is supplying arms to Russia for use in the ongoing war in Ukraine, an allegation that both North Korea and Russia deny.
Earlier Daryo mentioned that on July 25, a delegation from Russia, headed by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, arrived in North Korea to take part in the commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War's conclusion.
