In a bittersweet moment, Yuan Meng, the first panda ever born in France, bid farewell to the place it called home for six years as it embarked on a journey to its new residence in China. Enclosed in a glass cage adorned with bamboo shoots, the 120-kilogram panda, named Yuan Meng, glanced out of the cage as the staff at Beauval Zoo, located south of Paris, tearfully said their goodbyes. The name "Yuan Meng" carries the beautiful meaning of "the realization of a wish" or "accomplishment of a dream."
A crowd of well-wishers gathered to wave goodbye as the trailer carrying the panda's cage solemnly rolled out of the zoo, with the words "Bon Voyage Yuan Meng" elegantly painted on the sides.
Yuan Meng was born in 2017 to parents residing at Beauval Zoo, who were on a 10-year loan from China as part of a cooperative arrangement. The mother panda had later given birth to twin pandas, further strengthening the zoo's commitment to conservation efforts. However, as per the agreement, all the offspring were destined to be eventually returned to China.
Due to the unforeseen challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Yuan Meng's departure was previously postponed. While the trip had been meticulously planned, Rodolphe Delord, the director of Beauval Zoo, expressed that the day of parting ways with the beloved panda was "heartbreaking."
Giant pandas are known for their difficulties in breeding, making each birth a significant event for conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts alike. With only about 1,800 pandas remaining in the wild in China and a few hundred more in captivity worldwide, every effort to protect and preserve these iconic creatures is of utmost importance.
For many decades, China had employed "panda diplomacy," gifting friendly nations with the iconic bears as a symbol of goodwill and cooperation. However, in recent times, the country has adopted a new approach, lending pandas to international zoos on commercial terms to support conservation initiatives and promote global awareness of wildlife conservation.
As Yuan Meng's departure from France marks a new chapter in its life, both the French and Chinese people cherish the friendship and partnership fostered by this extraordinary panda's presence in France. Although farewells are never easy, Yuan Meng's journey to China symbolizes a shared commitment to safeguarding and preserving the natural wonders of our world.
