By November of 2023, a new landfill will be completed in Akhangaran, Tashkent region, with the participation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for $16mn, media reports.
The landfill's purpose is to collect household waste from the population of Tashkent and the Tashkent region.
A total of 30 hectares of land were allocated for the project, with 25 hectares designated explicitly for the landfill.
The entire landfill area will be covered with geotextiles, geogrid, and other geomaterials, and the bottom of the landfill will be a sealed basin to prevent any negative impact on groundwater and the atmosphere.
Rafael Bekmullin, the head of the branch "Mahsustrans" on waste handling and recycling, explained that pipes would be installed at the bottom of the landfill to pump water from the waste, and pipes for pumping gas and methane would be laid in the future to allow for the production of methane and electricity.
The landfill is designed to operate for 15-20 years and can hold approximately 20mn tons of waste.
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced in June 2019 the need for a new landfill in the Tashkent region, as the existing landfill in the Akhangaran region was filled to 98%.
In February 2022, Mirziyoyev noted that none of the 197 landfills in Uzbekistan met sanitary and environmental requirements, and 24 landfills were already filled.
Uzbekistan produces 7mn tons of solid waste annually, and this volume increases by 2% every year. With this in mind, Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection and other relevant authorities to restore order at the test sites and eliminate those that have already exceeded their resources.
In March of the same year, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) granted two loans worth $120mn to construct landfills in the Khorezm region and Karakalpakstan.
