The successful collaboration between the Tourism Development Support Fund and the Ministry of Defense of the Kyrgyz Republic has saved the mountaineering season in the country. With the assistance of these organisations and the support of the country's leadership, a helicopter from the Ministry of Defense will now be utilised to transport tourists and their equipment to the base mountaineering camps in Kyrgyzstan, Tourism Development Support Fund of the Kyrgyz Republic reported on July 19.
Mountaineering and trekking are highly sought-after forms of tourism in Kyrgyzstan, particularly among international visitors. However, the mountaineering season was in jeopardy when representatives of the Kyrgyz Association of Tour Operators and other related bodies highlighted the crucial role of a helicopter in facilitating mountain and climbing tours, as well as rescue operations in the country's challenging terrains. Previous years relied on rented helicopters from private foreign companies, but this year, such options were not available.
Fortunately, amendments to the regulations, supported by the Tourism Development Support Fund, allowed the Ministry of Defense to provide helicopter services for tourism purposes. This resolution ensures the delivery of climbers to the base camp and back, transportation of essential supplies like food, tents, and equipment, and overall security during their stay in the country.
The solution not only addresses the immediate challenges of the mountaineering season but also strengthens the development of mountaineering and trekking tourism in Kyrgyzstan. By leveraging the resources of the Ministry of Defense, Kyrgyz tour operators can now offer safer and more reliable experiences for domestic and international tourists, enhancing the appeal of the country as a destination for adventure and outdoor enthusiasts.
