The United States is making preparations to impose sanctions on Kyrgyzstan, as reported by The Washington Post on July 19. The sanctions are aimed at products, including drones, that are being transported from China to Russia through Kyrgyzstan. Officials from the U.S. presidential administration informed The Washington Post that these sanctions could be implemented by the end of July. While specific details of the sanctions were not provided, the officials highlighted that similar measures have been taken in the past, with relevant companies being added to blacklists.
"The volume of trade between Russia and the countries of Central Asia increased abnormally during and after the sanctions imposed during the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops. Products whose direct export to Russia is limited by sanctions are delivered to Moscow through Central Asian countries, including Kyrgyzstan," WP wrote.
The Washington Post has contacted the Kyrgyz Embassy in the United States for comment. They told the publication that the country is firmly committed to the fight against illegal trade.
Representatives of the diplomatic establishment attributed the increase in trade with Russia to the improvement of the monitoring system of goods crossing the border. The embassy also reminded that Russia is one of the main trading partners of Kyrgyzstan, and about one million Kyrgyz citizens live in its territory.
