Bulgarian authorities have taken significant steps to combat human smuggling activities in the country with a series of nationwide raids resulting in the arrest of 15 alleged smugglers. The operation also led to the detention of migrants, including women and children, who were attempting to enter central and Western Europe through illicit means.
The crackdown began after law enforcement discovered 40 migrants concealed inside a tanker truck that had been specially modified for human transportation. This shocking discovery prompted a 48-hour-long mission, during which approximately 300 migrants with irregular paperwork were apprehended.
As per the Bulgarian Interior Ministry, the smugglers employed highly inventive techniques and routes to transport migrants into Central and Western Europe. The successful operation highlights the determination of Bulgarian authorities to address the ongoing challenges posed by illegal immigration and human trafficking.
These developments occur against the backdrop of discussions surrounding Bulgaria's potential accession to the Schengen area. The European Parliament has expressed its desire to include Bulgaria and Romania in the visa-free zone, a proposal that has encountered resistance from countries like Austria. Presently, Bulgaria remains one of the few EU member states that are not part of the Schengen agreement.
Despite implementing a wire fence along its border with Turkey, Bulgaria has experienced an increase in attempts by migrants to cross the border, particularly following the Taliban's rise to power in Kabul in August 2021. The situation is further complicated by Turkey's political landscape, which has contributed to a surge in the number of asylum seekers. The Asylum Information Database (AIDA) reports that the number of asylum seekers in Bulgaria nearly doubled in 2022.
Human rights organizations have criticized Bulgaria for its treatment of migrants, accusing the country of employing brutal tactics to push them back. Reports indicate that both Bulgarian police and European border security force Frontex have been involved in these actions, with testimonies from migrants describing the dehumanizing treatment. The involvement of Frontex officers did not alleviate the harsh treatment experienced by migrants, as cited in the accounts collected by Human Rights Watch (HRW).
