Citizens of Uzbekistan arrived at the polling station in Moscow early in the morning to vote in the presidential elections.
Today, on July 9, at 8:00 (UZT), polling stations opened in Uzbekistan for early presidential elections. Voting at the polling stations is possible until 20:00 (UZT).
There are four candidates for the presidency: Ulugbek Inoyatov from the People's Democratic Party, Shavkat Mirziyoyev from the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan (UzLiDeP), Robahon Mahmudova from the "Adolat" Party, and Abdushukur Hamzaev from the Ecoparty.
President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, previously signed a decree appointing early elections for the head of the republic on July 9.
Conditions were created in Moscow for Uzbekistan citizens to vote in the presidential elections in Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this on Monday, opening negotiations with the Uzbekistan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakhtiyor Saidov.
"We are aware that, in accordance with the new constitution, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev issued a decree on early presidential elections on July 9 of this year. We are convinced that the preparation and conduct of the electoral campaign will be carried out at a high organizational level," said the Russian Foreign Minister.
"On our part, we will create all the conditions for Uzbek citizens residing in the Russian Federation, labor migrants, and other compatriots to have all the opportunities for their free expression of will."
Earlier, Mirziyoyev signed a law allowing early presidential elections, which came into force on May 8, and then issued a decree appointing early elections for the head of the republic on July 9. The Electoral Code previously allowed for early elections only in the case of the incumbent president's inability to fulfill their duties for three months. During this period, the powers of the head of state were transferred to the Chairman of the Senate.
On April 30, a nationwide referendum was held in Uzbekistan on a new version of the constitution, which extends the president's term from five to seven years and allows Mirziyoyev to be elected to this position again after two consecutive terms.
