Kyrgyzstan's judicial bodies have recently issued a ruling that grants citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic the freedom to choose between a patronym and matronym, media reports.
The new amendment to existing legal regulations has been declared final and mandatory for all departments and organizations by the Constitutional Court, with the requirement for approval by the Kyrgyz Cabinet.
The ruling came about due to the efforts of activist Altyn Kapalova, who petitioned the court on the issue of matronym. The decision has been widely shared on social media by Kapalova.
Previously, the absence of a matron institute in Kyrgyzstan prevented citizens from having this option.
'I would like to express my gratitude to the Constitutional Court of Kyrgyz Republic for their decision. I also extend my congratulations to my 16-year-old son, Kapalov Daniyar Altynovich, who will now be able to obtain a passport and take on my name as matronym',
Altyn Kapalova told media.
Kapalova explained that any adult applying for a passport can now use their mother's name as a matronymic.
