Iran can become a gas hub through supplies from Turkmenistan, Qatar and Russia, Oil Minister Javad Owji said on the sidelines of the eighth OPEC international seminar in Vienna.
"Our neighbours have excellent potential in terms of gas reserves - Qatar, Turkmenistan. These factors create a great opportunity to turn Iran into a regional gas hub," the official, quoted by TASS (Russia), noted. According to him, the talks with Russia started about two months ago. Owji added that Iran also has significant gas deposits and the necessary infrastructure linked to neighbouring countries.
Local experts told Daryo that a gas hub could be established in Bushehr province in southern Iran, located on the Persian Gulf coast.
Turkmen gas could flow into Iran through several branches with a total capacity of up to 14bn cubic metres annualy. The main route is the 200-km Korpeje-Kurt-Kui pipeline, which came on stream in 1997.
Previously, Iran said it was resuming direct purchases of Turkmen gas, suspended in 2017 due to a $1.8bn debt. Tehran claims that this duty has been fully repaid. In addition, since 2022, Iran's territory has been used to supply natural gas from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan on a swap basis.
