Tokyo and Ashgabat will initiate talks on the Tax Convention, the Japanese Foreign Ministry reports. The agenda includes replacing the Convention between the Japanese and Soviet governments for the Avoidance of Double Taxation with respect to Taxes on Income, signed in 1986.
"The result of the negotiations will not affect the application of the current Tax Convention between Japan and the countries other than Turkmenistan."
The foreign ministry's website also cites that exports from Japan to Turkmenistan last year amounted to 6.6bn yen (construction machines, motor vehicles, tubes and pipes).
Turkmen imports to Japan during the reporting period totalled 23m yen (works of art, antiques, inorganic chemicals, floor coverings).
