Turkmenistan, which is one of the key energy suppliers in the region, has proposed to start actively planning joint projects to diversify energy supplies.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov made the announcement during the virtual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), where he was invited as guest of honour. His remarks were published in local media June 5.
Berdimuhamedov proposed creating conditions for long-term cooperation in the energy sector by planning joint projects to diversify energy supplies.
"This is about both satisfying the needs of the SCO states and about the prospects of entering foreign markets," he said.

Ashgabat is now actively lobbying for a Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project.
The SCO includes regional powers such as China, Russia, India, Iran and Pakistan, as well as all Central Asian states except Turkmenistan.
Experts believe that the Central Asian country is a potential member of the SCO because it does not imply military cooperation and does not contradict the neutral status Turkmenistan has held since 1995.
