Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba has issued a warning to Germany, cautioning against any attempts to impede Ukraine's path to NATO membership.
In an interview with Bild, Kuleba urged Germany not to repeat the mistake made by former Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2008 during the Bucharest Summit, where she strongly opposed Ukraine's NATO aspirations. Kuleba argued that Merkel's stance at that time had inadvertently opened the door for Russia's invasion of Georgia and the illegal annexation of Crimea.
Highlighting the potential consequences of denying Ukraine's NATO membership, Kuleba emphasized that if Ukraine had become a NATO member in 2014, a large-scale war could have been averted. He stressed that although Ukraine does not intend to seek NATO membership during times of war, refusing Ukraine's entry into the alliance after the conflict would be detrimental to Europe's security. Kuleba firmly believes that for Europe to safeguard itself against Russia's aggression, Ukraine must become a NATO member.
Kuleba claims that Ukraine's accession to NATO is crucial for establishing peace and deterring future attacks. He argued that Russia would hesitate to attack Ukraine if it were a part of NATO, as the alliance's collective defense mechanism would come into play. Kuleba expressed Ukraine's reliance on Germany and other Western NATO countries to protect its eastern flank, and he emphasized Ukraine's willingness to shoulder the responsibility that comes with NATO membership.
