Leading media outlets in India, while covering the topic of India's concluding chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), also pay special attention to Indo-Uzbek relations, Dunyo reports.
Dipanjan Chaudhuri, a columnist for "The Economic Times," think that India's chairmanship in the SCO is coming to an end and holds historical significance for both India and the SCO. The publication quotes the words of the Uzbek ambassador to Delhi, Dilshod Akhatov, who stated that "India led this dynamically developing international structure for the first time during the year, thus initiating the cycle of chairmanship involving new member states within the SCO framework."
The article emphasizes that India assumed the chairmanship of the SCO from Uzbekistan at the Samarkand Summit last year. Uzbekistan, during its responsible chairmanship in the SCO, focused on a strategy of proactive development for the Organization by opening up new horizons of cooperation and tapping into untapped reserves possessed by each of its members, the author recalls.
The newspaper quotes the words of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan:
"Historically, Samarkand has been a melting pot of ideas and knowledge, where a common goal was 'cooked' - to live better, be more successful, and become happier. And everyone understood that friendly neighbors are half of your wealth, and you yourself are a blessing to them because you know that cooperation, trade, creativity, science, art, and the best ideas bring goodness, enrich and bring people together."
What is noteworthy is that the world from Samarkand is seen as unified and indivisible, rather than divided. This is the essence of the unique phenomenon called the "Spirit of Samarkand," on the basis of which a fundamentally new format of international interaction can be built, including within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, as emphasized in the article.
The website of the popular English-language television channel "WION" states that during the 22nd SCO Summit in Samarkand, a substantial package of various decisions and agreements was approved.
"These decisions encompass the Comprehensive Action Plan for 2023-2027 to implement the provisions of the Treaty on Long-Term Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation among SCO member states, the development of interconnectedness and the creation of efficient transportation corridors, and other relevant issues," the publication states.
The article published by the news agency "United News of India" highlights that during Uzbekistan's chairmanship last year, more than 80 major international events of various levels were successfully organized. This demonstrated the country's commitment to the goals of the SCO and contributed to the expansion of cooperation among member states.
Pravesh Kumar Gupta, a senior research fellow at the Vivekananda International Foundation, writes in his article in the analytical journal "Political Events" that Uzbekistan and India actively utilize the opportunities within the SCO to expand their cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, defense, and cultural exchanges.
Regular high-level meetings and negotiations contribute to the further development of collaboration between the two countries. The SCO is considered a crucial forum for India and Uzbekistan to strengthen bilateral relations, regional stability, and economic cooperation, as emphasized in the article.
The same Indian expert writes in an article in "The Times of India," "Uzbekistan is the largest country in Central Asia in terms of population, the second-largest economy in the region, and plays an active role in the SCO, as well as other regional and international organizations. During its chairmanship in the SCO, the country focused on strengthening trade and economic ties, developing production cooperation, expanding transport and communication connectivity, digital transformation, and a 'green' economy."
During Uzbekistan's chairmanship in the SCO, initiatives such as connectivity and the creation of efficient transport corridors, infrastructure development programs for SCO member countries, and the establishment of an Institute of Goodwill Ambassadors were put forward. The author mentions that a record number of 44 documents were adopted at the Samarkand Summit.
Rashmini Koparkar, an associate professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, in her analytical article distributed by the news agency "India Blooms," reminds us that Uzbekistan actively supported India's accession process into the SCO.
"In June 2016, during the Tashkent Summit chaired by Uzbekistan, a memorandum of India's commitments was signed to obtain the status of an SCO member state," the expert writes.
Noting the significant role of like-minded countries in India's successful chairmanship in the SCO, the Indian scholar delves into the relationship with Uzbekistan.
"In recent years, Uzbekistan has made dynamic progress in various fields. As part of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's Development Strategy, significant reforms have been implemented in the areas of governance, law, economy, and foreign policy," the expert emphasizes. "The efforts of the Uzbekistan's leadership to fundamentally improve relations with Central Asian states have ensured the strengthening of regional cooperation. Issues of connectivity and security played an important role during Uzbekistan's chairmanship in the SCO last year."
