German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Kyrgyzstan on Thursday, June 22, where Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov warmly welcomed him at the presidential palace, DW reports.
Steinmeier's visit to Kyrgyzstan, similar to his visit to Kazakhstan, aims to underscore Germany's readiness to establish itself as a partner to the republic and foster bilateral relations.
DPA agency informs that Steinmeier intends to position himself as an alternative to Russia and China, who traditionally hold significant influence in the Central Asian region.
During his visit to Bishkek, Steinmeier emphasized that a significant part of his agenda in Kyrgyzstan would be dedicated to discussing the repercussions of the war in Ukraine on Central Asian and European nations, including Germany.
Steinmeier highlighted that Germany was among the first countries to recognize Kyrgyzstan's independence. He emphasized the long-standing and rapidly evolving bilateral relations between the two nations, citing their frequent exchange of visits as evidence.
This marks Frank-Walter Steinmeier's third visit to Kyrgyzstan. From an economic standpoint, Germany finds Kyrgyzstan appealing due to its abundant reserves of rare metals and gold.
In response, President Sadyr Japarov stated that Bishkek favors maintaining active cooperation with Germany, acknowledging Germany's prominent position in Europe and globally. Japarov praised Germany for its political influence, economic potential, adherence to democratic values, fundamental freedoms, and human rights.
He expressed the importance of Germany's support in Kyrgyzstan's democratic development, establishing a robust civil society, and strengthening the legal system.
Prior to his visit to Kyrgyzstan, the German President had visited Kazakhstan, where he held discussions with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. During a joint press conference with Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Tokayev expressed hopes for a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and stated that Astana was prepared to contribute to this objective.
