During a joint press conference with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was on a state visit to Kazakhstan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed his hopes for a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine.
He emphasized that Kazakhstan is prepared to contribute as much as possible to achieve this objective, Tokayev's press service reports.
Speaking to journalists, President Tokayev reiterated Kazakhstan's stance on the situation surrounding Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of strictly adhering to the United Nations Charter and supporting the UN as a unified and universal organization worldwide. Additionally, he emphasized the need to back peace initiatives put forth by China and other nations.
President Tokayev expressed his hope for an end to the firing in the near future, which would create an opportunity to establish long-lasting peace in the region. He stated that Kazakhstan is ready to play its part in achieving this goal.
At the same time, President Tokayev acknowledged Kazakhstan's strategic partnership with Russia and emphasized the country's commitment to maintaining close ties and strengthening mutual cooperation both bilaterally and within relevant international organizations.
In June 2022 at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, President Tokayev informed Russian President Vladimir Putin that Kazakhstan would not recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.
