Two people with monkeypox have been identified in Guangzhou, in southern China's Guangdong province, and both have been isolated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"On June 10, two men aged 43 and 29 were diagnosed with monkeypox in Guangzhou," the center reported.
At the moment, the patients are being treated in isolation and in a specialized hospital, both of which continue to have mild symptoms.
In July 2022, the World Health Organization declared a state of emergency due to the monkeypox epidemic. At the beginning of May of this year, the state of emergency was canceled due to the reduction of the disease.
WHO estimated the death rate from monkeypox at 3-6 %.
Previous cases
Since 1970, monkeypox outbreaks have occurred in Central and East Africa (clade I) and West Africa (clade II). In 2003, an outbreak in the United States was linked to imported wild animals (clade II). The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reports thousands of suspected cases annually since 2005. In 2017, mpox re-emerged in Nigeria and has since spread within the country and among travelers. A global outbreak in 2022 affected 110 countries. In 2022, outbreaks of mpox related to clade I MPXV occurred in refugee camps in the Republic of Sudan.
