Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced his resignation as a member of the British Parliament in response to a scandal involving a party during the lockdown.
Johnson made this decision after reviewing the report from the House of Commons committee, BBC reports. In a statement, he criticized the committee, accusing it of having the intention to find him guilty regardless of the facts. Johnson stated that the draft report he had seen contained numerous inaccuracies and biases.
He expressed his belief that the committee was determined to use the case against him as a means to remove him from Parliament. Johnson emphasized that no evidence had been presented to prove that he deliberately misled the House of Commons, asserting that he did not lie.
Parliament's privileges committee - the main disciplinary body for lawmakers - had the power to recommend Johnson be suspended from parliament. If the suspension is for more than 10 days, voters in his constituency could have demanded he stood for re-election to continue as their representative.
